Summary
Jay Gatsby ends his career as Trimalchio due to Daisy’s dislike for his parties. Gatsby is invited to the Buchanan’s house for lunch and at Daisy's request and invitation, Nick accompanies them. After much protest from the rest of the group, Tom decides that the group of them should go to New York for the day. At this point Tom begins to notice that Daisy and Gatsby have apparent feelings for each other and it is shown more so when the two take Toms car without him. This is essentially the beginning of a tense period between Tom and Gatsby, both of whom attempt to prove that Daisy’s heart belongs to them. Earlier in the day, Mr. Wilson found out that his wife, Myrtle, is in an adulterous relationship with another man, leading him to conclude that the best solution is to move far away. The chapter concludes with Myrtle ironically being hit by Gatsby’s car on the way back from New York because she thinks Tom is driving, and and is running after him. Daisy is driving; however, everyone believes it was Gatsby.
